End of Ramadan

Just a quick note to say we are doing well. We were in the city to see Jay and Jenni's and Mary and Jamie's weddings. We got to watch Jay and Jenni's on yahoo messenger. Thanks so much to Rebecca Ingalls for the commentary. It was fun for us. It is Ramadan and they wanted to close early but when the situation was explained the guy at the internet cafe helped us out. Looked pretty good (the bride at least)! We tried not to think of all the tasty, sanitary food at the reception.

Mary and Jamie's, well we're excited to see the pictures when you all post them. Let us know when that happens.

Now it is back to village for the end of Ramadan fete. There will be plenty of eating and cheer after a month of fasting. Might have to bust out the Malian clothes. Neither of us will be particuarly sad that this month is finished, since people are quite ornery when they haven't eaten.

We travel to village in packed minivans on a road few in the states would believe. Few would even call it a road, for that matter. Picture a Land Rover television ad but instead of Land Rovers the trail is run by run down, third hand buses and big trucks. Shocks do not exisit in west africa.

Now we have to run. Don't want to miss our chance to get back to the party. Can't spoil ourselves in the airconditioned internet cafe anyway. Until next month.

Ahh! Third world motor travel!! Exciting! Rustic! Bruising! Terrifying! Glad to read how you two are rising to the challenges of another world quite handily. End of Ramadan, good times. Keep on truckin'... -JD

Of all the things I miss about Ramadan, it's the spitting that will have me counting the days until next September. It is an especially savory addition to celebrants that haven't eaten all day.

We had a blast at Jay and Jenni's wedding. You both were sorely missed. I had a nice chat with your mom too - who is as charming as always. Anyway, I get a real kick out of the blog. Keep the posts coming!!!!

Hi Sam and Mark!

I am Jackie and Pat Master's friend Liz Roderick, your fellow PCV neighbor over in Guinea and I just wanted to say hello! BONNE FETE!! Hope you are eating a ton and celebrating the end of Ramadan.

If you ever want to travel to Guinea, there is a really cool place called Doukie in Moyenne Guinea with crazy hikes and amazing scenery. How close are you to Bomako? There are volunteers in Kankan not too far from you.

Anywho, my email is on my blog should you ever want to venture west. I am also planning on attending the music festival in Segou at the beginning of February so let me know if you'll be there.

Keep up the good work! I just celebrated Day 300 in country! 37 percent finished! (but who's counting...)

Take care guys.

we're thinking about you lots and miss you guys. enjoy your experience (but hurry back!)

HOWDY HOWDY to my two favorite malians!

unfortunately, the opposite is true too, but i would like to rectify that, because i got that itch. give me crowded jitneys, sharing bakies with cow parts, unreliable trains, sand in my food, and having no clue what is going on cause i don't speak the languages. i'm in!

so the big question, when can i come? it can't be before march 2009, but after that...

and what was our deal? do i bring a painting to hang in your hut, or do i make you one from there?

let me know when you can, and until then, know you have all my love.

Hello Friends.
Just wanted to send my condolences regarding your Eagles this past weekend. (GO HEELS!!) I have no doubt that even in a 3rd world country you are managing to follow the Eagles. I went to the game and thought of you!!
I hope that all is well. I know that you are loving every minute of it!!
We think about y'all all of the time!!
